Why I love Pilates!!!

Why I love Pilates!!!

It would be some 15 years ago that I attended my first Pilates class.  My girlfriend had suggested we go and give it a try.  It was challenging, even overwhelming.  But I was impressed, especially with the emphasis on posture as the Pilates instructor cued “ imagine there is string coming from the crown of you head”.

It was after the birth of my 2 children, that my appreciation for Pilates really grew.  I attended a local mums and bubs class and loved it.  It was exactly what my body needed after pregnancy and labour.  The load that was placed on my body was intense and this was a wonderful way to improve my strength and flexibility.

As I slowly progressed and attended the intermediate class, I was just so impressed with the women more than twice my age and twice as strong!  They were a wonderful motivation and gave me an even greater appreciation for Pilates and the importance of consistency.

A few years later, I started weight training with one of my most amazing and inspirational girlfriends.  She suggested I have some private sessions with her trainer/Exercise Physiologist to ensure my form was correct.

Those sessions reinforced the importance of regular stretching, and strengthening the core with the use of the Swiss Ball.  Slowly re-building my strength, as I practiced the exercises prescribed regularly at home.

A couple of years later feeling strong and maybe a little too young at heart, I injured my back.

I loved my Pilates classes.  I remember the amazing feeling of my arms and legs feeling lengthened and strengthened.  But my back was not happy due to that injury.  For some time I struggled with back pain and back aches.  It would come and go, but it wasn’t resolving.  My Osteopath helped but I also needed to go back to the Exercise Physiologist for a Private Session to see what I could do to improve things.   I really missed my Pilates classes but knew that for the time being that had to go on hold.  I practiced my individual exercises daily that were specifically for my issues, which included the foam roller, which I love!!  My back pain reduced.  I needed to know more.  If you love a form of exercise and you know it’s great, but you also need to be aware that there are exercises that just aren’t right for you (no matter how determined you maybe).

From suffering in pain, missing the classes, and a passion to encourage women to love their bodies, especially after children, I studied and became a Pilates Instructor.  I still go to a wonderful Pilates Instructor who inspires me and fuels my passion for Pilates even more!  I am always learning, and as the passion just keeps growing for Pilates, it is definitely becoming an obsession!  I just want to learn and share more and more.

One of the most important things I have learnt are “one exercise does not fit all”.  Body awareness is so important and movement is equally important for managing my aches and pains.  Foam rolling would be on the top of my list for helping my body, along with stretching, and strengthening the body and really being aware of the muscles that I need to engage.

I hope to share what I have learnt, and also share the passion of loving your body, kindly and carefully.  It takes time when we have an injury or health issue or weakness after pregnancy.  But with the right support and desire to resolve it, and having fun along the way, we can manage our bodies and enjoy an active life with family and friends.

I personally love group exercise classes for motivation and encouragement to stay on track.  I also appreciate Private Sessions for tailored and individual needs to be addressed.  The two combined are a great way to take care of your body.  I also try and do at least some stretching daily and other exercises at home to maintain my body's strength. This is essential as we get older as our bodies need a little more attention then they use to.

Private Sessions are now available at Body Harmony Pilates either at the Erina Studio or at home or work, tailored to your needs and goals.  Products are also available for home use to keep you on track in between classes or private sessions.

Love your body.  Frances xo
